We bought Mrs. Shoe Pilot a Honda wagon a couple weekends ago. It had 144K on the clock so I figured it'd be ok inside. It's not.

I did an oil change today and there were wonderful little metal flakes in the drained oil. It looks to me like a bearing that's close to not being a bearing any more. So, it's time to figure out the best course of action. If I had a little more room in the garage and all my LeMons people here in Austin with me, I'd pull the engine myself, get the short block rebuilt and the head refreshed and put it back in.

I may end up getting a used motor put in instead. I found one with 89K on the clock for 800 bucks.

I would say to go the used engine route. If it wasn't for the fact that it was your wife's daily driver I'd say find an old ford 350 and shove it in there. Sure it would handle like shit but it would handle like awesome shit!

oh, it's not her daily. this is the utility car, for hauling dogs around, making home depot runs, etc.

ford swap would be a crazy cool project, but she does sort of want to drive the car again in a reasonable amount of time

Sounds like a swap is the way to go, it continues to surprise me how many under-used engines are lying around and how little sometimes people want for them.
